When it comes to finding an apprenticeship, bigger companies may not always be the best option and it is worth considering smaller, independent companies for greater hands-on experience and exposure to a variety of different roles. This is particularly true when it comes to manufacturing. A smaller business is able to be reactive to your individual needs as well provide opportunities to be involved in the whole production process.
Quantamatic Limited is a family run manufacturing business based in Leicestershire. The company specialises in the production of high volume small turned parts used in industries such as Automotive, Aerospace, Electronics, Sports and Jewellery, and has a successful history of supporting apprentices through their studies and helping them embark on a career path in engineering and manufacturing.
Luke Moulding, Head of Product Development explains why smaller businesses can be the better option for apprenticeships, “We have spoken to all our apprentices, some of whom qualified years ago, and are still with us and others who are nearing the end of their studies. The common theme from them all is that they enjoyed the variety of skills they experienced as this has allowed them to decide on their favourite area to specialise in. Their close involvement with the production process has also helped motivate them with their studies as it can be challenging to work and study at the same time.”
Luke continues, “As a small business, it really can be all hands to the deck to get us through busy times and the apprentices are expected to step up and help, giving them the opportunity to work on areas across the whole production process and experience working under pressure, whilst being supported by the team. Alongside the different roles, there is also variety in the qualifications that are being studied for, from Research and Development to both Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.”
Apprentice Phil Gerrard added, “I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school. I had other family members who also worked in Engineering, so it seemed a good path to take. I wanted to follow the Apprenticeship route to gain experience and earn money whilst I completed my studies. I finished my Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering with Quantamatic in 2014 and have been working here ever since. My favourite role is machine maintenance, and it is satisfying to know that the work I do is critical to keep production running.”
